What is Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Microsoft 365 Copilot is an AI-powered productivity tool that integrates Large Language Models (LLMs), content from Microsoft Graph, and the Microsoft 365 apps you use daily, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. Copilot provides intelligent, real-time assistance to help boost your creativity, productivity, and skills. It uses a combination of deep learning algorithms and large datasets to understand, summarize, predict, and generate content.
Copilot is seamlessly embedded into the most commonly used Microsoft apps, freeing up time for focused work. It also supports visual content creation using DALL·E, OpenAI’s image generation model.

AI, security, and compliance
To manage risk, organizations need clear data governance, including permissions, sensitivity labels, and retention policies. Microsoft’s AI follows six core principles: Fairness, Reliability, Security, Privacy, Inclusiveness, and Transparency. All AI processing happens via internal Azure OpenAI services in your home region, ensuring data isn’t processed outside authorized data centers.
Licensing & strategic investments in AI
Make sure you’re eligible to purchase Copilot licenses.Ask:
- Do we have the right agreements in place?
- How do we assign licenses when they’re expensive?
- Who needs Copilot—and who doesn’t?
Start by building a business case and working actively with cost control to ensure your investment delivers value to the right users.
AI Culture & Change Leadership
To ensure safe and confident Copilot usage, it's vital to provide clear “do’s & don’ts” for employees. Help users consider which data is appropriate to analyze and introduce Copilot in a well-planned, phased way. This new way of working requires change management, training, and communication—not just once, but continuously, as the technology evolves rapidly.
Security och AI
Preparing your internal environment for AI is key. Risk areas include permissions, data protection, and lifecycle management. Prevent over-sharing, implement sensitivity labels and retention policies, and ensure compliance with data residency regulations (especially relevant inside/outside the EU). A strong data governance strategy is essential to maximize the impact of Microsoft 365 Copilot.
AI Infrastructure
Within Azure Active Directory, ensure your Copilot users are properly configured and have access to all relevant apps and services. Users must be on the Current Channel to receive updates early. As Copilot handles and analyses large volumes of data, network conditions must be optimized—this may include enabling Quality of Service (QoS) and ensuring WebSockets are unblocked. All AI processing occurs within your Microsoft 365 tenant using internal Azure OpenAI services—no external OpenAI services are used, and all processing stays within your approved region.
Boost productivity with AI
Microsoft 365 Copilot can reduce manual work, speed up search, summarize meetings, generate content, and support data analysis.
Studies show that Copilot users report:
- 87% increased productivity
- 79% more focus on important tasks
- 81% less time spent searching for information
- 96% would be disappointed if Copilot were removed
- 83% don’t want to work without it
- 47% say Copilot access influences their choice of employer
Development & AI Integration
Copilot is also set to accelerate app and workflow development. It will provide code suggestions—not full low-code/no-code functionality—but helpful support for writing simple code faster and more accurately, especially within Microsoft’s ecosystem.
